Peptide glossary.
Plain-language definitions for the terms you'll see on a certificate of analysis, a product page, or a reconstitution protocol.
- Amino acid
- The molecular building block of peptides and proteins. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds.
- Aliquot
- A measured portion of a reconstituted solution withdrawn for a single use, divided so the parent vial isn't repeatedly entered.
- Bacteriostatic water
- Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits bacterial growth — the standard solvent for reconstituting lyophilized research peptides.
- Bioavailability
- The proportion of a compound that reaches its target intact and active. A research metric, not a human-use claim.
- Certificate of Analysis (COA)
- A third-party lab document reporting a specific batch's purity, identity, and composition — the proof behind every Red Helix lot.
- Concentration
- The amount of peptide per unit of solvent after reconstitution (e.g. mg/mL), determined by vial strength and the water volume you add.
- Endotoxin testing
- An assay (e.g. LAL) that screens for bacterial endotoxins, confirming a sample meets sterility expectations for laboratory work.
- GIP
- Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide — an incretin hormone receptor studied alongside GLP-1 in metabolic research.
- GLP-1
- Glucagon-like peptide-1 — an incretin receptor central to glycemic and metabolic research; the target of agonists such as semaglutide.
- Half-life
- The time for a compound's concentration to fall by half. Informs how researchers model stability and exposure in vitro.
- HPLC
- High-Performance Liquid Chromatography — the analytical method used to measure a peptide's purity percentage on its COA.
- Identity confirmation
- Verification (typically by mass spectrometry) that a sample is the intended compound at the expected molecular weight.
- Lyophilization
- Freeze-drying. Peptides are lyophilized into a dry powder or 'puck' for stable storage and shipping; the cake is fragile and often breaks in transit (which is normal).
- Mass spectrometry
- An analytical technique that measures molecular weight to confirm a peptide's identity, complementing HPLC purity analysis.
- Peptide
- A short chain of amino acids (typically fewer than ~50) linked by peptide bonds — the class of research compounds Red Helix supplies.
- Purity
- The percentage of a sample that is the intended peptide, as measured by HPLC. Red Helix requires ≥98% for every batch.
- Reconstitution
- The process of dissolving a lyophilized peptide powder in a sterile solvent (bacteriostatic water) to make a working solution.
- Sterile technique
- Laboratory practice — disinfected septa, sterile syringes, clean workspace, PPE — used to prevent contamination during handling.
